Restoration of Stained glass and lamps

Stained Glass can last hundreds of years, but it suffers from constant exposure to the elements. The restoration of stained glass includes changing the lead cane or copper foil, which tightly holds the pieces of glass together, replacing, or restoring broken pieces of glass, retouching painted elements on glass, cleaning debris accumulated within the layers, and applying cement to strengthen the structure of the artwork. When restoring a stained-glass piece, the first step is to make an analysis of the artwork and see what needs to be done. The most important aspect of a restoration is to keep the artwork as original as possible and try to avoid replacing original pieces for new ones unless it is necessary. In the case a piece must be replaced we are committed to find the glass that matches the original. In all our restoration work, we are committed to excellence and to strengthen the structure of the artwork for years to come.

Copper foil Stained glass

Copper foil is a technique that was developed by Tiffany Studios that consists of putting together the glass pieces by wrapping their edges with copper foil and then soldering them together. Copper foil is of great use in the creation of lamps because it allows the glass pieces to be arranged on top of a curved surface. It is also used in window-stained glass pieces. A work made with copper foil technique will be lighter in weight than one made with lead cane.

Leaded stained glass

Leaded stained glass is put together by running pieces of lead cane between the glass pieces. An experienced stained-glass artist assembles the work one piece at a time and makes sure that the pieces fit together tightly. After being assembled it is then soldered and glazed. Glazing is a process of applying cement putty in the empty spaces between the lead cane and the glass pieces, this process strengthens the structure of the artwork. Finally, the artwork is cleaned and polished, ready to be displayed for the enjoyment of the audience for years to come.

Sandblasting and etching

Frosted texture sand blasting is a technique that can be used in stained glass to create images with a frosted texture effect. It is made with a machine that blasts abrasive sand down on the glass panel. This technique is most used on clear glass since the transparency of the glass makes the image sharper. In contrast to sandblasting, etching is achieved by using chemicals such as acid to create the frosted effect.
